How to identify this edition
These points tell this edition apart from other printings and editions of Augustus.
✓ Copyright page: “First published in 1972 by The Viking Press, Inc.”; its last line is “Printed in U.S.A. by Vail-Ballou Press, Inc.”
✓ Dust jacket: orange and yellow, bronze head of Augustus, “a novel by JOHN WILLIAMS”
✓ Price: $7.95 on the front flap (unclipped); later printings kept it, so the price alone doesn’t prove a first
✓ Binding: red paper-covered boards, green cloth spine lettered in gilt, pink top edge, map endpapers
